Richard Linklater’s SLACKER inspired a generation of American filmmakers by exploring the subculture of Austin, Texas in a loose narrative with a tapestry of quirky characters. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of that iconic movie, 24 of Austin’s top filmmakers banded together to update SLACKER with their own perspectives on the city.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Slacker, Stuck On On was invited by The Austin Film Society and The Alamo Drafthouse to do the post on Slacker 2011.

Slackerwood has been interviewing all of the filmmakers about recreating their individual scenes. Allison had a chance to chat with them about Stuck On On’s role and how we came to get involved with the project.

Hot off the presses, here is a sneak peak at Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter. It will hit theaters Sept 30th.

Take Shelter took Grand Prix at Cannes Critics Week, the SACD prize for best screenwriting and the FIPRESCI prize for best film among the Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week sections. Stuck On On was responsible for the edit, sound design, foley, sound effects editing, color correction, DI and final deliverables.

Take Shelter

In July, we started editing director Jeff Nichols’s second feature Take Shelter, starring Mike Shannon and Jessica Chastain, shot on Super 35. We completed the edit, color correction, DI, sound design, foley and sound effects editing in January just in time for its Sundance 2011 premiere. It was purchased by Sony Pictures Classic and is scheduled for theatrical release later this year. We had the pleasure of working with the VFX team at Hydraulx in Santa Monica and Will Files’s audio team at Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA., where the final mix was done.

We also had the opportunity to work on two amazing films that will be making their debut at SXSW this year. Luckily, we convinced our remote Amsterdam colorist Joe Malina to extend his Christmas trip and set him up in our 2nd color suite running our new Davinci Resolve.

Restive + See You Soon Again

Teaming up with re-recording mixer Eric Friend, we completed the sound and color on director Jeremiah Jones’s narrative feature Restive (which screened at Cinequest last week). And finally, director Bernadette Wegenstein’s documentary See You Soon Again will screen later this month at The Festival of Austrian Film. The film was edited by Patrick Wright, who produced last years’ Oscar winning documentary short  Music by Prudence.

Méliès

We also had the pleasure of mixing and sound designing Hubbard/Birchler’s most recent video installation Méliès which was on exhibit at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in Chelsea. It makes it’s Austin debut this Sat, March 12th at the Lora Reynolds Gallery, 360 Nueces, Suite 50, and will be on view until May 7th.

We just finished music and sound design on a new TXDOT seat belt campaign for the always wonderful folks at Shiny Object.

Meet the Digits

This project was a perfect excuse for Lyman to indulge his ukulele fantasies. Ron Pippin of Shiny Object called us up and asked us to be part of this amazing fundraising video for the Ronald McDonald House of Austin. The music needed to be handmade, simple and heartfelt to match the tone and creative direction.

Datalove

In addition, we did some mastering work on the new Datalove record “Another Beat Another Buck” by Austin electronic guru Cory Allen. Check it out here.

Total Unicorn, the amalgamation between Lyman Hardy’s beats and Stephen Fishman’s subconscious, will perform at Plutopia 2011: The Future of Play, a SXSW Interactive extravaganza on Mon, March 14th @ the Mexican American Cultural Center.

Take Shelter is Vanity Fair’s Most Anticipated Film of 2011

We are absolutely ecstatic to announce that Jeff Nichols’ film Take Shelter will be 1 of 16 films in competition at Sundance 2011.

The Stuck On On team has been working closely with Jeff since July on this amazing project. Parke Gregg is editing and doing the digital intermediate (DI) on the Scratch. Lyman Hardy is responsible for all the ambient audio editing, sound design and foley. Allison Turrell keeps everyone on task and schedule as the post production coordinator.

“The purpose of the HUBZone program is to provide federal contracting assistance for qualified SBCs located in historically underutilized business zones in an effort to increase employment opportunities, investment, and economic development in such areas.”

Based on the Act, small businesses will be designated as HUBZone certified if they have the following criteria:

1. The firm must be a small business based on the NAICS for size standards.
2. The business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by citizens of the United States.
3. The firm’s principal office (the location where the greatest number of employees perform their work, excluding contract sites) must be in a HUBZone.
4. 35% of the firms total workforce must reside in a HUBZone.

We just finished music and color correction for Action Figure‘s video for SolarBridge Technologies. The color correction was unique because the interviews were lit to mimic the sun. We had to maintain the sun’s heat and look while simultaneously balancing the backdrops and isolating the skin tones.

The musical direction was airy, fun and kinetic. Director Mark Miks said, “I’m hungry for some Dao.”

Film

Three films we worked on exploded this Summer: The Big Bends, Winnebago Man and The Happy Poet!

Director Jason Marlow’s The Big Bends Screened at Festival de Cannes in June.

Lyman composed 7 songs for Director Ben Steinbauer’s documentary  Winnebago Man which took U.S. theaters by storm in July. Winnebago Man will be released on DVD by Kino International on Nov. 2nd.

Director Paul Gordon’s The Happy Poet Screened at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. It was the only American film screening at Venice Days.

We transcoded RED iPAD dailies for Director Aaron Burn’s feature Blacktino in August.

We are currently co-editing and will be doing the DI (Digital Intermediate) for “Untitled Jeff Nichols Project.” It is a psychological drama shot on 35 mm, written and directed by Jeff Nichols (“Shotgun Stories”), and starring Academy Award-nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Tree of Life”).

Jeff’s critically acclaimed first film, Shotgun Stories, screened at several festivals including the Austin Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. He was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and won the Fipresci Prize at the Venice Viennale.

The Scratch

Stuck On On upgraded to the Scratch. The Scratch is a high-end color correction and DI (Digital Intermediate) system for features and commercials. It allows us to manipulate and color grade RED Raw and ARRI Alexa RAW in their native resolution. 4K in realtime! It up’s the ante of our Digital Lab services, making Dailies and Online more robust. We’ve also chosen this tool so we can easily upgrade to Stereoscopic when the time comes. Stay tuned for some demos later this month or early October.

Music

We just finished music and sound design for Exopolis on their Microsoft Tag video. They wanted the music to be contemporary, urban, flowing and upbeat.

Composers

We are thrilled to announce we’ve added the über talented Kevin Schneider and Adrian Quesada to our roster of composers. We have a new library of music to share and they are also available for custom music via Stuck On On. If you like what you hear, give Allison a shout.

Kevin Schneider is an instrumentalist in the indie band Shearwater. He just came off an around the world tour promoting their new album The Golden Archipelago on Matador Records. They’ll also be playing Austin City Limits Music Festival in October. Kevin was one of the original founders of SuperAlright! Some of his clients include Dell, Transmission Entertainment and the TV show Dinner with the Band.

We’ve also added Grammy nominated Adrian Quesada to our roster of composers. As a musician he is best known as co-founder of the bands Grupo Fantasma, Brownout and Ocote Soul Sounds. He has worked with such artists as Prince, Thievery Corporation, Daniel Jonhston and Chicago. As a composer he has worked on two award winning documentaries, 2008 SXSW Audience Award Winner Inside the Circle and the 2009 PBS documentary The Least of These. His music has been featured on such TV shows as Entourage, The Real World and Breaking Bad. Recently, he was one of twenty musicians in the world nominated for the prestigious Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative and work with the legendary Brian Eno.

Slinky by Brownout

We color corrected and mixed this video with Austin Film Society. It premiered at their Make Watch Love Film Party in June at Austin Studios.

On June 18th, honorary hosts Richard Linklater, Mike Judge, Robert Rodriguez, Louis Black and Elizabeth Avellán gathered with the Austin film community at Austin Studios for an evening honoring Moody Anderson, celebrating CHAINSAWS, SLACKERS AND SPY KIDS: 30 Years of Filmmaking in Austin, the new book by Alison Macor, networking and live show with the Derailers.
